The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has finally released the provisional results for the 2010 Population and Housing Census. Ghana’s population size is now twenty four million, two hundred and twenty three thousand, four hundred and thirty one (24,223,431). The results indicate that, the female population in the country is one over million that of the male populace. Women constitute 12,421,770, with men at 11,801,661. The figures show that the population of Ghana increased by some 28.1%. In terms of growth rate, the Northern Region recorded the highest followed by the Greater Accra Region. The provisional figure was initially scheduled to be released last Monday, January 31st but could not come on due to some technical reasons, according to the GSS. This led to agitations and speculations by Ghanaians people reading their own meanings into the postponement. The New Patriotic Party (NPP), it would be recalled, raised red flag over the inability of the Secretariat to release the figures as planned. According to the General Secretary of the Party, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, there are attempts by some elements at the Statistical service to massage figures from the Volta Region. But this claim was refuted by the Communications Officer at the Secretariat, Michael Adu-Gyamfi, who revealed that all the technical hitches have been resolved. He has also denied claims that the results from the regions are being manipulated.
